Exactly 25 years ago today, on April 1, 1997, the company Martin Bencher Scandinavia was registered. We opened our doors for business, from a 20 square meter office in Copenhagen.
The MB team at the time was the two founders, Bo H. Drewsen (34), Peter Thorsoe Jensen (29), and our young trainee, Rikke Clausen. Bo’s father, Bue Drewsen, also helped out as a surveyor and general support to the small team.
The name Martin Bencher came from the UK. We knew the people behind Martin Bencher UK Ltd very well and they generously allowed us to use the name in the Nordic countries. If memory serves us correctly, it only costs us a few pints at the local pub.
Starting capital was about USD 15,000 – which was immediately spent on marketing material and flight tickets to the big world outside Denmark. “You have to get out of the office…”. It worked then and it works today.
Armed with very heavy and thick Toshiba laptops and the latest Ericsson cell phones, we set out to conquer the world, or at least some parts of it.
The value proposition was “know-how” about China, “know-how” about project logistics, a can-do attitude, and a vast network of people worldwide who could help us to find answers and solutions to most issues.
Our first projects were wind turbines from Denmark to China, one project to Ningbo, the other to Inner Mongolia. Great projects and a fantastic start for the new company. Next up was lab modules to China for a Swedish customer and then we got started with the paper and pulp industry, with a project to Dagang in China comprising of 600 containers and 11000 cbm of breakbulk.
A HUGE project for a small start-up like ours and we are forever grateful and humbled by the confidence placed in us by the customer. They could have booked with many other established companies, but they decided to give us the chance.
The rest, as they say, is pretty much history. We have been growing the company step by step, following our customers around the world, opening offices where it made sense, all the time working hard to stay relevant, to never let go of the Can-Do attitude. We are active in most industries, the most dominant being Pulp and Paper, Renewables, Power, Cranes and Infrastructure, Mining, Aeronautics, Industrial projects.
We have made many mistakes along the way but that’s part of it. You learn from your mistakes and work hard not to repeat them.
Martin Bencher is a much bigger company today than it was in 1997, but many things remain the same. Today we have offices in more than 20 countries and we can deliver on all the demands that large professional customer requires. Yet we work hard to maintain the flexibility of a smaller company, to always have the Can-Do attitude and to remain relevant, not only today but for many years to come.
It has been a great journey so far and it has only been possible because of all the great Martin Bencher employees, our valued customers, and our good suppliers.
From the owners of Martin Bencher Group, a huge THANK YOU to all stakeholders, for all your trust, and support. We are looking forward to the next 25 years and whatever adventures they may bring.
